    Default Cape Streams Movie

I have an idea for a movie about the Cape Streams, and fishing in and around the Cape.
I have not really discussed this with many people, so the ideas are really my own at this stage, but I think it may be a good idea to start a "think tank" to get ideas for this project. I would appreciate any input that might be valuable.
I have made a few exploratory callt to "Cape Town Routes Unlimited", and they are willing to evaluate a business proposal, which I should start working on in the new year. The movie would be for multiple purposses, but essentially to raise money for fly fishing in our province, and country. The target market would be local and international fly fishing tourism, and general interest.

Here are a few basic points that I have considered:-

The movie should run for about 1.5 to2 hours, and should cover lots of fishing, and a minimal of "off the water" stuff. I find that most fly fishing movies are drawn out by the other stuff that is not actually fishing, although one cannot ignore certain elements of geography, bird life etc.
We would use local anglers, both expert and novice. Some humour is always a good idea.

    Funding:-

A project like this could take a year or more to complete, and would be enourmously expensive, perhaps running into hundreds of thousands of rands, if it is to be done properly.
Funds for this would have to come from various sources. Corporates, government (tourism bodies) publishing houses.

    Marketing:-

While a project like this is certain to run at a loss, there are areas where indirect benifit could be gained, such a tourism, and sponsors branding.
Marketing of the movie, would probably be done through local and international distributors.
If it is really good, it could be marketed to television stations.

    What is needed:-

We need input from the following:-

    A good narrator
A good script writer (for the scripted sections)
Anyone involved in production of this type of movie.

Ideas will be welcome. I know absolutely nothing about this type of thing, so if i am way out of reality here, i would not be surprised, but I have been around long enough to realise that good things begin with little ideas.

Let the ideas start flowing, and if it becomes a reality, let it be a supreme team effort.

    Brilliant idea.
    Some ideas for the thinktank.
Maybe we can approach the City Varsity.
they have a department where they do TV films etc.
Combine that with one of their projects.
Some of those students have the latest cameras HD etc.
We might not have to rent a camera and camera man.

For a story maybe along the Lonely Planet theme, $100 taxi ride.
A fly fisher gets off the plane with a fly rod and a bag. Takes a taxi to the nearest fly store. Owner phones a couple of flyfishers and see what comes to fruition.
Ends up fishing the whole Cape on the good heart, nature, good will of the fly fishers. Accomodation etc.
Lots of fun, hilarious scenes etc. Reality TV stuff

I have discussed a similar article with Chris Shelton a while ago.

I have been planning such a trip in the back of my mind for a while now.

Maybe to draw on the experience of an international person visiting the Cape would be good to have a look at a different perspective during the planning phase? I am thinking for example of the Polish guy that Korrie hosted a while ago. He may be able to give some very useable input.

I volunteer to be the flyfisherman who gets off the plane.

Seriously, I think it is a great idea! With more time on my hands now that I'm almost finished with school, I think I would like to contribute.

Andre, I would just like to make sure I understand this correctly... Are we talking about a general fly fishing DVD about the Cape Streams, or will it take o the form of a story?

    Kind regards,
    PTN

    Excellent concept!
I do think that you could approach sponsors with a creative concept to get funding. A point on distribution being that people are likely to hand a good dvd to mates. So in-product promotion can provide an excellent sales platform...

I would suggest hd equipment and an experienced crew. Production values sell.

As a narrator uncle Tom is a good choice! But is your focus local appeal or international?

    (cell post sorry for typesetting)

Tom Sutcliff could be a very good choice indeed.

The more I think about this, the more I think that making a story of it could be exciting. It may indeed be difficult to build a story entirely around the Cape Streams, but I think it may be possible. The thing is, a good story will help sell the movie too. Non-fishers may enjoy it too, almost like A River Runs Through It.

    Kind regards,
