You've got too little experience on both species to make that an objective claim for serious consideration.

Not having caught a yellow yet....(puts head up own bum in embarresment)
I must say that going for bass is as LeRoy says, a great fight and the dirtier the better, by the fish. On light tackle, they have been for me, a formidable quarry. My wish list for this coming season is huge...be it a headache or whatever
Behold the fisherman. he riseth early in the morning and disturbeth the whole household. mighty are his preperations. he goes forth full of hope and when the day is ended, he returneth smelling of strong drink and the truth is not with him. originator unknown.

Smallies are a fantastic flyrod target. They are aggressive and fight hard. In rivers they are probably more like trout than largemouth bass. Great fight too, I do miss fishing for them. Pity they don't grow a little bit bigger though.

The comparison with a brook trout is not a good one. Brookies in my experience are hopeless fighters, even the big ones. A goldfish could pull the crap out of a brookie.

Brownies aren't the best fighters either so I'm sure a smallie will tow a similar sized brownie around no problem.

But rainbows are a bit diffferent. I think that on the whole a riverbred rainbow has a distinct fighting edge over a smallie - certainly much faster than a smallie.
Life is a series of trout missions with that numbing feeling in between...

I think the question was are we 'missing out'..........the answer is simple, no, only if your a bass fisherman and cannot find bass.
I caught my first resonable size bass on fly not long back and yes was very impressed with the fight and it did not give up easily,
but you could also ask Talpia "are we missing out" caught one of those on fly and shiiiiit they motor off into the weeds at one hell of a pace and give a good account of themselfs, also medium size carp 1-3kg range on fly are we 'missing out' also a good fight.

I do not think your missing out if you cannot target Bass on flie, there are plenty of other options.
I think no innocent species of wit or pleasantry should be suppressed; and that a good pun may be admitted among the smaller excellencies of lively conversation.

saw this recent comment by Lefty Kreh :
"But if i had one more day to spend fishing in freshwater it would be floating a river for smallmouth bass. In saltwater I would rather chase bonefish than any other specie."
