Hi Guys, here's my crab fly. Used dubbing mixed with epoxy for the body and elastic bands for the legs. The eyes are earbuds, but i make them with burnt 100lb mono these days.
Hey guys, ive never fished crab patterns before.. what hook size are we looking at here and how would you fish them and in what sort of water?

I started tying fresh water crabs for Lakensvlei.
After seeing the amount of crabs in their stomachs, it was the way to go.
For the body, I use a dark green furry foam, with epoxy.
Have had varied succes with it. I think it needs more refinement to be a consistent fish taker.

Soft-bodied crab imitations are in my opinion the best - especially as fish have the time to 'feel' the fly by nature of the static or slow nature in which they are fished. As others have mentioned the crab is at it's most vulnerable and juicy when it's just moulted it's shell. In England we used to call these 'peeler' crabs. Rather like going to your local Pork 'N Cheese restaurant and having your prawns de-shelled before you eat them. Not quite as much fun but a darn sight quicker and more comfortable to eat than shelled crustaceans!
