But this is exactly why so many guys ff instead of dropshot, because it is just so much more difficult then dropshot. Any oke can pick up a dropshot rod and catch fish, it takes a much more skilled angler to pick up a fly rod and catch fish straight away.

I have absolutely nothing againts drop shot and will use it from time to time when the conditions dont suit FF but if i had to choose my fly rod will come first even if the oke next to me is clapping fish on his drop shot and i am not even getting a touch.

I think what makes DS so damn effective is the ease with which you can change your presentation.

Far more presentations, far more time in the water.
You can go from topwater to bottom and vice versa on the same presentation.
You can fish fast, slow, high and low.

Don't get me wrong........ I love flyfishing too!

Drop shot is great for the kids as well. I have used it in the Richtersveld as well, and caught largies and smallies on it. One of the benefits, is that it is really easy to regulate the depth at which you fish, so in a big pool on the Vaal or Orange, it can work like a treat. As for the sea, it works very well in the splash zone as well, for elf and steenbras. Done this quite abit in the garden route.

Yeah Rox! I know exactly what you mean, there is something special about the process and experience of flyfishing.

There is something really cool about a line which magically loops out over the water and presents your hand tied fly to those wily buggers and they take the bait!

Anyway, I also like catching fish no matter how I do it and as long as I don't harm them too much and they are able to swim away strongly!

I am a die hard ff and on more than one occasion we have outfished the dropshot guys 20-1 in the garden route estuaries. It is effective but you can put much more life in a fly and it can look like the real thing. I also have a dropshot kit, but this will work only when searching for fish in a new location, search with it, find them and switch to fly. Nothing will ever beat that pull you feel on the line in your hands, thas the best part of fly fishing for me.

Ya, similar, but with a specialised hook, with a weight permanently attached. Lures are rubber immitations of fish and worms and stuff.

    Technically thats not correct.

Andre's definition is the South African interpretation of drop shotting, which is basically fishing soft plastics on a jig hook, something the rest of the world refers to as "soft baiting". In actual fact drop shotting is a technique whereby a soft plastic bait is presented with a weight suspended roughly a foot below it. The "weightless" bait is far more effective when fishing for finicky fish as the weight or shot is dropped below the bait giving the bait a better action. Now you know
