    Default New to this all....

    Hey guys!!!!

I got a fly rod for my birthday from my boyfriend and am keen to learn as much as I can about fly-fishing. Aside from the actual fishing part of it...which he's teaching me...I'm keen to learn how to tie flies. Are there any groups that meet in the Pretoria area? Also, where are the nice, affordable places to fish around Pretoria?

Or just any advice would be cool. :-)

Hi Angi, Welcome to the forum.

Seeing that your boyfriend bought you the kit, I need to ask, Is he a f/f ? and if so, is he a member of the forum?

On the tool bar, 3rd from right, there is a search button. Click it and be prepared to read for months.

If my reply seems a bit "off beat", it's only because I'm a very cynical person, and have seen many similar "help me " posts in the past, which were posted by forum members using a different IP address.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

    Hi,

Take a peek at some of these ...

My recommendation still holds ... pick a fly you want to learn to tie either because you WANT to or because it is the fly you use most, then get the materials for it and go nuts.

Many fly shops will also be able to give you tying lessons, especially Fly Fishers Unlimited in JHB ... I'm sure you know that murray Pedder is the TCFF fly tying field editor and a superb tyer ... lessons are usually like R150 an hour but you have attributes that may just score you some extra time out of the hardened old toppie fly tyers

Get your boyfriend involved in tying too, even my ex GF's that didn't really ever get into the fishing part of my obsession really enjoyed learning to tie flies, it's all sparkle, marabou and feathers ... much like playing barbie dress up in school :P

Good luck ... welcome to an obsession that will ruin your life and wallet.

    Hi Angi

Welcome. The learning curve for this pastime is steep and you never really stop looking for new info or fly patterns, how and when to fish them, were why an so it goes.

Forums are not only a great and never ending source of info but also a great place to ask for help and get some sort of fishing fix if your stuck and can not go fishing.

I hope you enjoy it here and remember to show and tell.

    Hi Herman...

He is indeed! He actually works as a fishing guide...he is also a member of the forum. But, I'm interested in learning things on my own too...developing my own ideas, opinions, skills, etc. I'll have a look through the previous "help me" posts and see what I can take from them, but I think everyone likes to have their questions personally answered...even if they are the same questions everyone else asks! ;-)

Thanks though, I'll definitely read through some stuff...
