Where will you be using it? If it's for a trout still water, the best fishfinder will be a selection of reels with the following lines:-
floater, 1.5 intermediate, DI 3, DI 5, DI 7. More than that , you are wasting your time and money.
Howzit peeps,
I'm currently looking for a decent fish finder for my inflatable pontoon.. Are there any suggestions out there. I'm not necessarily looking for top of the range, but not bottom of the range either..something decent and reliable..
Looking forward to hearing some of the ideas!

I suppose for various places, but mainly for the vaal river..
What about the portable ones they are advertising at the top of the main forum page? For R999 seems a bargain
what are you referring to by "inflatable pontoon"
A duck type boat or a pontoon boat type float tube.
If the former, try checking out the Hummingbird range, big screen, big buttons, pretty rough and tumble and it works well enough for finding structure on the Vaal, such as one uses the fish finders for.

If you think that you need a fishfinder for the Vaal, then you probably do.
I just cant see what a fishfinder can do, that normal pair of good eyes can't.

I recently bought a Humminbird for my float tube:

Paid about R1600. I bought it mainly for the ability to see the structure, depth, temp etc. Finding fish is secondary, but the side scan feature is very nice!
That could be said for most waters then... Anyway, when fishing off the boat, and having the kind of clarity the Vaal offers, it can be rather deceiving.. To find nice drop offs and good structure is worth getting the fishfinder..especially when fishing for largies which is challenging enough!!
Scythe, I have the Heron pontoon boat.. Guess I'm just trying to see what guys are generally using and if they like what they use or would they rather opt for something better..
