If you can do a roll cast on grass, its time to be an instuctor on water...
Its easy and when you start using it, its so flippen useful!!

Hi,
Casting is not the hardest thing to master, but IMHO if you start out wrong and develop bad habbits they can really hamper your progress when you need to use the cast to its full potential.
If you want my opinion give Mark Yelland a ring at the Fly Shop in Bryanston. 011-7060482
Make an appointment with him and he'll set you straight......no doubt in my mind about that. He does charge R250 for the lesson (normally about an hour), but its the best R250 you'll spend in a long time.
then you go home and practice, fish etc etc etc ..... and about 6 months later go back for another lesson and you'll be set.!
that's what I did and i cannot regret any of the lessons.
Regards
Agostino

Hi Nic
Just wave the stick around until the line lands in front of you. Only kidding
Casting with Lefty - the best casting book I have ever had or seen on the art of casting a fly with great pics of the right and wrong way to do many casts from the roll cast to the hole in the tree cast and the belgium wind cast to name just a few.
I will gladly help you improve your casting if you like although I am no expert and I dont charge anything.
I agree with Dave that there is quite a difference in roll casting on the grass and in the water. I have practicved on both and water makes it easier to feel the rod when roll casting especially if you are doing power side roll casts or steeple roll casting i.e it is near impossible to power roll cast on the grass.
Although some might think the difference between the grass and water tension is minimal it still makes a difference however you can overcome this by tying a few nots in your leader and leaving the tag ends to "hookup' in the grass. This water tension is what makes the role cast work at its best so yes if you want to practice on the grass without some knots on the leader then when you get to the water your D formation will not be of the best as you are too used to putting more speed into your rod instead of using the watertension to load the rod leading into a smooth and gracefull roll cast and not a roll swipe. If you like you can also practice a short range roll cast in the pool just to get the process and arm movements (and stopping) right before heading out to the water.
Just my 2 cents.
