    Default Good fly rod

Hi guys, as with bow shooting I also started with what the guys recommended as the best entry (starter) rod and quickly realised that maybe must have settled for something a but better. Settled on a Sensation prince II. Got a 4 and 6 weight, enjoy casting the 6 but struggling with the 4. Looking on maybe selling both or one and getting a nice 4/5 or 5/6 rod. What rods would you guys recommend? I mainly enjoy stillwater fishing for trout in large dams. thanks

Like the different bows. Bowtech, Hoyt, PSE and Mathews you have to decide what rod works for you by casting different rods before you decide. (Like shooting the different bows before you buy)

I have been shooting Bowtech since 2005 and I have been fishing TFO rods also since 2005 and have been very happy with the rods.

    Hi Gerhard

Just spoke to one of my mates at work which is big into fly-fishing and he also fishes TFO rods. Maybe start shopping around for one and start finding out prices.

    Also shoot Bowtech (Destroyer 340).

    Regards

Like Gerhard says go out and cast the rods and find one that will suite your casting style. I bought a TFO and Struggled to cast in light wind with it. Haven't used it for almost 2 years now. ( won another 3wt that worked for me). There are alot of threads on this topic and all come to the same conclusion tests the rods before you buy.

    Yea,

I was a Pro Staff shooter for Bowtech last year.

Like Bowtech TFO rods have different kinds of rods.

Like the D 350, D340 or the Invasion from Bowtech TFO has rods like the TiCr or the Jim Teeny to name a few.

You need to determine what you want out of the rod and then go and test drive the rod if possible.

    Hope this helps.

This coming Saturday we have a 'OPEN Day" at our shop in Fourways. You will be able to cast pretty much all the Stealth fly rods , our own brand Rhythm and a few rods from Thomas & Thomas , including the brand new TNT. As all the guys mention , rather "cast" the rod or "shoot" the bow before you buy. By the way , i also shoot Bowtec.

The day will be from 09:00 - 17:00 , we will also of course have all the Rugby live.

    Thanks guys.

At this current point in time I want distance out of the rod and a little feel. Where can I go and test TFO rods?

Thanks Ricko, but out of some experience, I don't touch Stealth .

Maybe come and try the other rods though .

Machann - if you are willing to spend the money, just go and buy a Sage Z-axis. If you can't make that rod work for you, then your casting is at fault.

If its distance you want, the TFO's are a good option. What price tag are you looking at? The Sage VXP range might also be a good option. I shoot Mathews and for some reason its relevant in this thread

If its distance you want, a casting lesson may be a good option?
    Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line;
Let me, less cruel, cast feather'd hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the prey
