I dont blank, I always do my homework before a trip, when I get to my venue, research the conditions that have lapsed, then proceed to study the present situation. Yes!! it may take some time, but the fish will succumb. Hard work, but pays in the end.

Dave, you just contradicted your previous post

I have blanked, often, especially in winter on the Vaal.

There again I'm still a Newbie, Wannabee so I have a valid excuse.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

I think the best anyone can reasonably hope for is not to blank for a season on their home water/s.

I haven't blanked on the vaal since July (about 20 days fishing), which is hardly going to get me a provincial selection, but deserves a noddy badge.

Anytime you go to new water, your chances of blanking are much higher due to a lack of knowledge. Any fisherman who never has a blank day is either ridiculously good or doesn't fish a wide enough variety of venues.

That's true. If you fish the same waters all the time you get a feel of what usually works. I have two "canned hunting" venues that I like to fish in winter and I seldom blank, but new venues are another story!!

I suppose success is directly proportional to knowledge. I've only been fly fishing for about a year and am beginning to realise that it can be quite scientific - being able to work out where the fish will be and what food is available to them in a certain season, at a certain time of day etc.

Measuring water temperature and understanding how that will affect (whether and) what the trout will eat is my newest revelation.

I suppose it boils down to what Dave was saying - do your homework before you start fishing a new venue.

After all that, there are still days when you'll blank - a sharp drop in barometric pressure and the Cape streams go as quiet as the grave

I generally fish the waters in Rhodes. Counting 350+ km of river and stream, I'd hardly call it canned fishing if that is all I fish though. It's tough to blank in Rhodes to be honest - you'll usually get a fish here and there, even if it is tough.
