What is the point of this tie down? To hide thread behind bead? If so I can still see the thread btw. And it's an additional step??
But will try it when I tie off again thanks.
nice tip, thanks
Regards
Craig

The solution to any problem -- work, love, money, whatever -- is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach
Neat little trick there Grant. Just tied one and it worked beautifully. Thanks
Behold the fisherman. he riseth early in the morning and disturbeth the whole household. mighty are his preperations. he goes forth full of hope and when the day is ended, he returneth smelling of strong drink and the truth is not with him. originator unknown.

Glad i could help!
Gerrit, it's just to try and make the fly look a bit neater and not have that big bulk of thread between the bead and the thorax. Probably makes no difference to the fish, but makes a difference to me, and in my opinion confidence in the flies you tie gets you half way to catching the fish with them.
If you think about it, This is quite a durable tie off. The thread is not exposed so will not wear on a fish's mouth as might happen if you whip finish and leave the thread exposed, but now i am just trying too hard to find excuses for my actions! I just do it cos i think it's cool.

I posted this pic in Shamwari's thread, but thought i would post it here to show a bit of a neater application of this technique. The dubbing is pretty much flush with the bead for this one and is a better example of how it could look. Apologies for the bad pic but you will get the idea of what i mean.
