I went thru the same exercise a while ago and I got exactly what I wanted but if I had to do it again, I would build my own rod, or shall I say modify. Take a 9ft XH Exage or similar spinning stick and modify it to suit. You are not going to cast with this stick. Spend all the remaining cash on the biggest reel you can get. There is a thread somewhere where I went thru all the motions. Still have not used my setup but I'm ready now, having ironed out all the other "minor" issues like actually finding the fish and catching enough on conventional to want to try something else.

Thanks for the replies guys.........why can't u pull a 30kg yf on a 14w.yes I don't have experience with it but I imagine it can be done.just doesn't seem right to modify a boat|spinning stick into a "flyrod"

Steve you can Pull a 30KG yellowfin on one no problem in 25 degree water !!

The challenge comes in when his 95 kg brother takes the fly first in 18 degree water

Most fly rods are not built to lift they are built to cast and with the way the tuna go straight down (as apposed to away from ) the boat
it makes the fly rod a verry ineffective tool to fight Large YFT as you lose all your leverage

not saying dont get one just get the heavyist one you can find
and preferably one designed for blue water work

Steve the problem is picking a 30 kilo YFT out of a shoal that will have a good number of 60 kilo plus fish in it!!!!

a 60 kilo plus fish on a 14 weight is gonna take you 2 hours plus I reckon, if you lucky.... a mate of mine who fishes both recreational and commercial, and who is not gentle on fish by any stretch of the imagination, and who catches well over 100 Yellowfin each season, and has Tuna fishing in his blood, got snot klapped by an 86 kilo fish on Saturday that took him an hour and 30 minutes... he usually takes no more than 25 minutes on most tuna to 80 kilos.... thats fishing on standup gear, 37 kilo line, and a harness.... That fish will not be catchable on fly gear in my opinion...

That being said, a buddy of mine borrowed one of my jigging rigs on Saturday, first time ever to the deep, only his second time jigging ever, and nailed this 55 kilo YFT on one of our SW Labs jigs.... fight time of 18 minutes...

Can be done on a 14wt rod. But this one is still small compared to some cruising about in the shoals, as Nepps said.

I can build you a proper Jigging Rod turned flyrod. If you are willing to spend a few bucks, yes then I can build you a 8'6 Calstar Rod.

Go and read up about Calstar, their 80lb Stand Up Tuna Blanks have caught more 200lb plus Tuna than all the rods in the world combined.

So yes, if you are serious about getting a serious stick, give me a shout
Another alternative is to get a stick from Neps and to have the butt converted for fly purposes.

I agree that u can't choose a fish of a certain weight.....u never know what u going to hook.....but to take a spinning stick and put a flyreel on it means I might as well put a conventional reel on it and fish it that way.....that's a hellava fish nepps....good on him.....I saw u jig a nice carp recently....desperate times d
