it seems that you also have a piece of closed cell foam to help with the floating?
I like this one too .....
I'm tying flies a LOT messier than usual these days. A combination of time, as well as belief they actually do fool more fish that way

Sorry, should have said it was not my tie (image from http://raspberryfisher.wordpress.com) ... simply posting some flies I'm finding and that I'm planning to tie and fish (at some stage).
For me personally the antron/wing is there as a wing. Yes, it will help (especially me) with spotting it, but I see it as a wing. The foam post is probably to help float it, but I don't think it would have problems floating without it. There is a lot to keep that fly up.
