Bingo, for the vaal you could add:
the two caddis - macros and hydros
the two common midges like simulidae and caenis
    stoneflies - perlidae
dragons and damsels - cant remember for the life of me

and you'd cover most of the common insect life, no need to go down to species.

Anyone experienced significant ant falls on the upper/middle vaal?

Once, about 6-7 years ago. The fishing ended up being insane.

Does any one have a couple of nice photos of the prominent mayflies on the VAAL?

    Caddis:

As per Jocko's post the family is Hydropsychidae with various species within that family. Macrostemum Capense, Hydropsyche sp and a third which I can't remember but it's a small jobbie and not very common.

    Mayflies:

Burrowers: Only found in certain spots on the Vaal as far as I know. (Ferdie aka Nympho introduced us to them some years back)
Clingers: Heptageniidae (Flat head jobs) Fast water.
Crawlers: Tricorythidae or Trico's as we refer to them. Watch out for the migration to the edges during pre hatch.
Swimmers: Baetidae very common and referred to as PMD's and BWO depending on the specie. Def the most prolific.

I'm sure there are more but I haven't spend much time investigating / researching them, I'm on a Barb hunt!!!!.

    Hope it helps!

    Cheers

Here's an interesting field guide regarding aquatic insects, and it seems like DWAF is giving it away for free
