Central America Salt: Help needed

Hey Guys



I am trying to plan a trip to Central America in search of some bones and permit.

There is a ton of places to go, and I was wondering if anyone on the forum had any comments on experiences in CA?

I have been looking at Belize and Costa Rico - The main aim is lots of bones and permit, not 100lb+ tarpon. I would rather catch 30 bones a day then spend my time chasing 1 trophy tarpon and having to fight then for 90 minutes.

Any comments would be massively appreciated.

Jade, it would be wise to speak to the boys at Frontier or Fly Castway. I think they would be able to help you or at least offer some insight. Also, check the fishing magazine advertising sections...

@Peter, thanks man - will have a look. I am organising the trip for my old man, so I think it will be a mixture of DIY and guided. The old man wants to catch a permit, so I think we will need a guide and skip for that trip?

just do your research cos i've seen some shows in the American waters where they use darker coloured flies for the bones due to the bottom structure...

i'm doing the same at the end of April next year. At the moment DIY options on the Yucutan from Tulum down to Punta Allen seem very promising. see below link. apparently the beaches and ruins etc are also epic. appreciate if you keep me up to date with what you find and i'll do the same.

My wife and I were in Yucutan, Mexico in June 2010. And mixed it up with some sight seeing, holiday and 4 days fishing from Punta Allen on Ascension Bay. It is an awesome fishery. And unreal place and scenery. Caught many bones. Saw many permit and stuffed up 3 good shots at permit.
Saw some small tarpon, but we were not really targeting them. They also have snook. Awesome snorkelling. Great Ruins. Good guides/boats. Excellent food and very nice people.
Will go back there any day.

We flew to Altanta, then Cancun and drove a rent-a-car from there. Cancun is very touristy, but the other places like Merida and Tulum are great.

We arranged our trip in Punta Allen with Greg Rahe and his wife Lupita - http://www.clubgrandslam.com. She's an unreal cook and Greg made all the arrangements with the local boats and guides.
There are many boats and guides and one can probably arrange things when you get there.
