    Default Calling the old guard.

    Hi Guys

I have just recently returned back from a 5 year stint in the UK and am now based in Durban. Is there any of the 'old guard' (by old I mean experienced ) that is based in Durbs willing to show me 'the newbie' the ropes (or should that be lines) as well as some of the 'local' spots. I have heard Tinely Manor and Westbrook may be a good place to start as well as the good ol' Durban Harbour. I am also quite keen to do a trip up to Kosi/Vidal once a month during the season to target those monster GT's and Kings up there. I guess the ultimate goal is to join the 100 club but isn't that every saltwater fly fisherman's goal.

Reply here or send me a PM

    Thanks
    Julian

I know from when I lived in Durban that the beach below Sun Coast Casino wasnt to bad for wave Garrick, use to fish the harbour, we use to get Kingies and the odd springer, there are loads of big grunter but never tried for them on fly
Fly-fishing is the most fun you can have standing up

We've had a couple of good sessions in the harbour lately with springer, kingies and pompano coming out.

As Trevor said, Casino Beach is great for wavies (kingies, garrick, pompano, thorn fish, shad, etc have also come out). It's also close to home and great for a pre-work session. This photo was taken there last week.

Westbrook is good but I haven't tried Tinley so I can't comment there.

As for Vidal and Kosi. They're in a league of their own.

Hey Warren thanks for the info. When is the next DFT meeting? Was thinking of coming along to that next month. I know its normally on the first Monday of the month but seeing as the 1st April is a Public Holiday I wasn't sure if would be on the 1st or the 8th. Where about do you fish in the harbour? I do a lot of conventional fishing off a ski and have been toying with the idea of paddling my ski across to the sandbank and fishing from there. Do you know what the restrictions are fishing in the harbour? Alternatively I will just drift and fish the drop offs from my ski?

I live in Westville at the moment and work in Pinetown so the early morning sessions probably wont work too well for me seeing as the sun is rising later and later these days. But def want to try sneak a trip up to Vidal or Kosi soon before winter sets in.

I have had a look at your website its awesome man really cool trip reports and info on there. Really like the Lesotho trip write up. Been threatening to do that since I was in school. Sounds like its not too much of a mission. Are you guys planning on doing another trip before the rivers close in May?

I think you're correct in that it's been moved to the second Monday in the Westville library (due to the public holiday). I run a DFT Facebook page and a Twitter account, so I'll post the information on there as soon as I know. It's definitely worth popping in to the meetings as a lot of trips are organised from there.

The Lesotho trips are awesome. We've done a few of them an are hoping to sneak in one more before the rivers close. This time we want to go somewhere more remote though. If you're keen to join us, the more the merrier.

Feel free to drop me an e-mail or join up on Facebook for updates. The Lesotho trips aren't usually part of the DFT, we tend to organise those ourselves.

Yell if you have any questions.

Thanks Richard.I think I will start but popping in to the next DFT meeting in April. Will hopefully catch up with one or two people there. I think they do the odd outing so that would be a good starting point. Warren from Baha has been very helpful already.

    Hi Julz,

I'm on the DFT committee and also help with the organising of salt water trips. It's definitely worth pulling in to the next meeting.

We should be hitting the salt this weekend but are fishing off a boat so unfortunately can't invite you. However next time we go you're welcome to come along.

    Cheers,
    Warren

Cool thanks Warren. Probably going to go wet a line on Sunday afternoon on the pushing tide somewhere on the north coast not sure where yet but either Boulders or Salmon bay depending on the swell or else I will just go down to the harbour and see if there is anything happening there.

    Tight lines
    J
