Wesley's Nymph Delight (WND) SBS

This is a little nymph i developed last year for fishing the Umzimkhulu River. It is perfect for targeting trout in fast, low, crystal clear water and can be tied in a rather untidy fashion. Its not the most attractive looking fly but its definately effective.

size: #14-#18
thread: black
body: copper wire
thorax: soft part of a doves feather (marabou or pretty much any down feather will also work)
undertail: short tag of red bucktail
tail: soft part of a doves feather (marabou will also work)

step 1: Place the hook in the vice and lay a thread base to in line with the barb of the hook.


step 2: Tie in a few strands of red bucktail.


step 3: Cut the bucktail into a short square tag


step 4: Tie in a sparse amount of the doves feather over the bucktail to form the tail.


step 5: Tie in a piece of copper wire along the top of the fly.

step 6: wrap the wire in tight coils to just behind the eye of the hook (double the wire over to form a hump about a third of the way behind the eye)


step 7: run the thread from the eye to the hump you made in the coils.


step 8: lightly dub some dove feather onto the thread and create a rounded thorax.


step 9: form a small black head with the tying thread and whip finish (a small amount of head cement can be applied)

Pleasure, its more to represent dislodged nymphs than an emerger and is best fished right on the bottom. Similar to a copper john but with a lot more movement provided by the tail and thorax.
