    Default Question on Boobies

Ha, thought that would get some attention...

Just a query on Booby flies, is it a standard practice to add some lead on the shank to allow the fly to suspend more horizontally as apposed to a vertical position. Or does it suspend vertically in anycase.

I have found in my other fishing relating pursuits, lures that suspend in a natural position when static and when retrieved trigger more takes, or so it seemed.

Yeah for sure! I was thinking to add a little bit of weight to balance the fly out, so that when it suspends, it sits horizontally in the water column...

A Stinking line does not work so well, better try a sinking line.
a floating line works well. Put the Booby as the top dropper, let it create a wake and have 2 naturals behind as a point and 1st dropper

Shammers, I've fished boobies a lot in New Zealand.

In all honesty, I can't see it making any difference to the fly whether you add lead or not.
I know what you mean though about getting the fly to swim right way though.
In my personal fishing I have never added lead and have always caught fish.

I think the type of material used (flowing, lots of movement) makes more of a difference.
Also, there is very little retrieving being done - mostly heave and leave type fishing near river mouth and stream mouths or in deep channels.

For the eyes, use closed cell foam as it lasts a lot longer too.

It can be quite an addictive way to fish when you feel that deep grab on the fly.

I think it would probably be easier to tie a small styrene ball under the tail rather than try weighting the front of the fly. My 2 cents worth.

cool info guys! A pattern I have never fished before, will be interesting to give it a go. I just like flies and lures as a matter of fact that glide down or suspend naturally as a apposed to dive bombing if fishing a weighted lure / fly.
