    Jeez Craig, you've got me racking my brains here. It must surely have been one of the early explorers/specimen hunters? How about François Le Vaillant? His third trip was round about the time you refer to, when he travelled to Namaqualand and as far as the Orange. I unfortunately sold my copy of the reprint, so I am a bit sketchy on the details.

    Ah ok I think William Somerville was the original Stream X guy! From my research I glean that he was not very partial to favouring the public with whatever knowledge he had accumulated! My kind of guy! lol
