    Default Moggel

It seems that contrary to popular belief, moggel can be taken on fly. Most of us only catch these fish by foul hooking. I recently fished a stretch of the Vaal, upstream of the Vaal Dam. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose the exact details of the venue.

I was generally fishing deeper, slower waters, and had a big fly as my point fly in the hopes of attracting the attentions of a largemouth. In stead, I caught four moggels. Two of them were foul hooked, as per usual. But two, had the fly firmly hooked in the mouth! One took the smaller top fly, but more surprisingly, one took the big double mrs. simpson point fly. I always imagined, that if one was to ever catch a moggel legitimately, it would be on some very small nymph.

Below are photos of the two fish.

I have a theory that Moggel hit the fly with its tail as part of feedin habbit, disorientating the nymph before turning around and eating it. That is, as part of my theory, why so many are foul hooked.

Have also caught them on big Woolly Buggers in the mouth.
