I would concentrate in the early morning and late afternoon on the rising fish on dry fly.

Thank you Korrie, any ideas on flies I can use?
In the evening, Elk hair caddis.
Morning Elk Hair caddis and some mayfly patterns.
You can also try for grass carp.
For the evening rises, check the last 45 minutes before dark.
After the sun has set, the fish tend to start rising, but before it is completely dark

Thinking about dam fishing, I am getting a longing to sit along side the water with lines in for the night and a friendly fire burning, while you are watching the "poliesman" drinking a whisky or 2 and later some condens milk coffee and rusks as a good night cap before you get into your tent to catch 40 winks.

You are right Korrie, every type of fishing has it's perks
thank you I will definitely give it a go!
I used to papgooi in the Vaal dam many years back & then only recently started flyfishing. What worked well was a grasshopper imitation in the shallows next to long grass. Look for fish movement in the early mornings/evenings. You will more than likely only catch grass carp (which is not all that bad since they do provide a good battle on a 5wt).
