Yeah, I've always paid anything from about R40 - R50 too.

I have for YEARS used el-cheapo clear and black nail varnish .... I find it less brittle than Hard-As-Nails ... and have never had a fly fall to bits as a result of bad head varnish.

I buy the stuff at "Milnerton Market" ... where it is about half the price of anywhere else!!
I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.

Yup, markets are great to find bargain varnishes, materrials etc.

A tip for those who don't do it is to leave the varnish in the fridge.

On a personal note Jasper, I'm struggling to come to terms with a senior maths teacher wandering around markets wearing black nail polish, but as you say, 'Carpe Diem'!!

Sally Hansens has another wonderful use. Brush some over some white sparkle braid or mylar tubing and watch the colours emerge! Amazing! It also works wonders on ribbed scudback. Gives a great transition between upper and lower fly when just attached to the top as the colours change at the edge of the sally hansens.

I like it for that, and heads on larger flies, but for all other flies I use the loon one mentioned earlier - much more forgiving.
