    Default Fly Tyers

    How many fly tiers are there in South Africa?
    I am not talking about pro fly tiers - indeed, anybody who ties flies.

    I know that nobody will really know the exact number,
    but what is your best estimate?

    best guess, between 25% and 50% of all flyfishers. it's a HUGE guess.

    Hi Grant

    25% to 50% of how many Flyfishers?
    Although it might seem like a trivial question, indeed it is not.

    Thanks

    i asked a couple of my mates here on this, and they had varying answers in the beginning, but came to the same, or similar end result. i'm going out on a limb here....thinking of my own experience, i would hazard a guess at 60 per cent. my gut feel is 70, but thats as we get sucked into the whole process
    and then become confident and also hear of others tying their own and try it and either stay or buy. looking back i would say 70%. what about doing the poll thing? that always seems to level the playing field

    Think that tackle shop enquiry would be the best place to start.

    A bit of PT but I'm sure you have your reasons and thus should pay-off...

    I would say around 65-70 % of fly fishing folks would tie their own but that would be a shot in the dark.

    Surely the major manufacturers would have this type of info, whether they are willing to share it with you is a different story. Maybe find out how may magazines the publishers make/sell and you could get an idea from that. Find out what % of FFmen they estimate buy their mags and then you will have an idea of how my FFmen there are in SA. The % of that that tie their own flies would be a guess though... Good luck with that!
    Around the steel no tortur'd worm shall twine, No blood of living insect stain my line;
    Let me, less cruel, cast feather'd hook, With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
    Silent along the mazy margin stray, And with fur-wrought fly delude the prey
