I always use my fingers, more control - I never use the tool. As for pros and cons - whatever works best for you.

If you can whip finish by hand ... without a tool ... then you can whip finish anything in any tying situation. That's the benefit.

I find that the hand method is not exact as far as thread placement is concerned. The thread also always seems to get dirty.

Superglue is an option and it works well enough. I would still cover the head with varnish though.

I use my hands. The first fly I ever tied, I didnt even know what a whip finish was... I just tied the thread off "my own way".... it was only later that I realised that "my way" was whip finishing.

That's exactly my prob I've been having.A tool sure beats walking to the bathroom/kitchen and washing hands all the time.(fine for dark thread)

Not only house dust and sweat and what not but also my twak habit.I've got way more control with the tool and thread placement is no issue at all.

    Thanks Mc

I like using for run o' the mill stuff a piece of looped 2lb Maxima with five or so touching wraps over a la rod building - also veyr easy when you're sitting at a vice and not tying 'al fresco' in the bush without a vice

If working with beaver fur, I prefer to work with my hands and fingers initially, and then add the final touches with a tool................
