    a 5wt is FINE for your average fowl ... but if you want a Spurwing Goose or maybe an Ostrich I recommend at least a 12 wt!!

    Remember to point your rod in the opposite direction to the direction it moves off ... i.e point it DOWN!!

    (one of course is also reminded of the classic English poacher method of raisins soaked in whiskey .... makes it possible to pick up those pheasant!)

    ... while on this (rediculous) topic .. I once DID hook a BAT at Lakenvlei!! ... it took a delicately presented dry on my backcast!

    Haha!

    I've hooked many swans on the Thames in my yoof, also a couple of flying seagulls in Melbourne (not sporting to hook them on the ground..)
