ok....so it sounds like yello's are a bit quieter in the colder times? judging from our last trip... as soon as our guide / host stepped into the water, he said "waters cold....we gonna battle"......he was the only one who caught fish though. yello's in winter? a challenge big time compared to warmer months?
not having caught a yello, hence my questions. sorry if they've been asked before
cheers

Rols, some would say that SM are easier in winter than in summer. Especially so for you guys from the WC. You are used to stalking, sighting, and casting to the chosen fish.
The average Vaal angler, plops, drifts, plops, drifts et al throughout summer, 'cos it works most of the time.
In winter they move off to Mpululanga regions for the troot.
If you can sight a fish, work out it's beat, and execute a 15m cast you will catch SM in winter.
The only trick is to know where to look for 'em, and that only comes with practise, perserverence, a helping hand , practise and did I say perserverence. To quote from a mentor " It is not in the fish, It is in the fishing".
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

Fishing in winter can be temperamental, moreso than in summer even.
Rols, though SmallMouth do seem to become rather tight lipped in lower temperatures, I know of LargeMouth taken while the river water was forming ice in the eyelets/snakelets of the rods.
Well done on your first dry fly caught SmallMouth MyWorld, now you know, it's not that difficult, in most cases SmallMouth cooperate very nicely in terms of taking your fly regardless of sloppy casts and bad fly selection.
They can get super fussy and super spooky at times though, if the current flows maintain the current viz of around 1M will improve and it will be a lot of fun watching your flies swim right through a school of 100+ fish only to be ignored like it has herpes. (No, I was not using one of my FL Caddis)
What's there to say about taking fish on dry fly?
1) Long leaders.
2) Identify the rise type, you want porpoise rises.
3) Appropriate flies will work better.
4) Cast longer distances.
5) Presentation DOES become important.
6) Keep your eyes open and find the fish.
7) Follow the hatches closely.
8) When sighfishing, remember that most fish are opportunistic.
9) You want porpoise rises, but you can catch them without porpoise rises.
10) Good sunglasses, you will be finding fish 30M away using contrast.
I had a very nice situation this past Thursday. Sitting on a rock watched three 3KG SmallMouth move into a very small (say max 30M) secondary pool and come up to the rocks at my feet completely turned on their sides hoovering the rocks.
Present with no more than 1m of my line out, fish turned around looked right at me while mouthing the fly for a good two or three seconds, strike, zweeeeeeeee.
All of this while being about 30cm below the surface in viz of 1M.
Awesome !
