The bait fisherman use earth worms so i would imagine that a San Juan worm wouldn't be the worst choice.

At a dam close to me there are some kurpers. i've caught them on the San Juan and a very small black popper. Also on a white fly with a bit of sparkly stuff in the head.

What i usually do is to tie on the white fly at the point and a split shot about 7 cm in front of it and then about 25cm from that the small black popper.

The black popper is about 5 mm long and has a bit of white or orange around the neck area.

I also caught some kurpers, bass and blue gill on a cricket popper I made myself.

Here is the instructions for what it is worth.
Take some foam, about 2 cm in length and 1 cm thick, and color it black with a permanent marker.

When it is dry you stick a needle with some sewing thread that it tied to form a loop through it. You pull this through and just before it goed through you put a thin rubber band in the loop and pull it through. Knot the rubber band about 5 mm from each side to form legs and snip it off after another 5mm. Do this twice so that it has 4 legs.

Tie some thread onto a hook and then super glue the body to the hook. Then you tie it down with some white thread to form the white neck of the cricket.

I fished it in the middle of the leader with a split shot crimped about 10 cm on each side and another fly about 15 cm back from it. The split shots makes it sink but the fly is above the bottom.

    Hope it helps.
What sometimes works for me is to let the fly hit the water quite hard and create a bit of a splash. The fish come to investigate and see the "cricket" twitching. Bang and you're on.

    Cheers

I was trying to catch Bass on fly in the Hoedspruit area, I used a normal piece of gut as leader, no lies, no fancy leaders etc. I have learned better however, but on that day I zapped a nice Mozambiquer on Olive Bead Head Wooly Bugger, lekker fight....

I have also caught on dry fly like DDD's etc at Fanie Botha dam in Tzaneen...I think one has to try different flies and see what happens according to the day (maybe weather wise) and according to what the fish are doing, I reckon you will definately catch a bream or kurper without much hastle.

I have caught them along with trout in certain Cape streams on small dry flies. I would imagine that a small grasshopper or beetle immitation would represent a treat!

I have once or twice fished in dams with Kurper and had great success on small PTNs and Hot Spot PTNs, I by no means am a specialist on kurper, but I would imagine that you need to treat them the same as any fish on fly, match the food source in the water.

In the Komatie River in a rapid I caught a decent sizes Banded Tilapia on a GHRE, in a rapid.

    Default New fly in test

    Hi there Folks.

My oldman gave me a prototype fly to try out but i went and lost the two i had. The fly is made of Redish purple latex (colour added on the underside with marking pens) and looks a lot like a earth worm.

It looks like the latex is first tied around a thin piece of wire and then it is tied to the hook like a San Juan worm but a bit more "juicy".

I had an absolute cracker with this fly til i ran out now if only i could get him to tie a few more. Next time i will save on to show you guys...

Sounds interesting, post a photo of it when you get some more.
Fly-fishing surpasses the need to actually catch a fish, it becomes a mindset, and with time, an obsession.

Lord, grant that I may catch a fish so big that even I,
    When speaking afterwards,
May have no need to lie.
    Amen

Kurper build nests out of the sand which they use as a nursery. They gaurd these nest quite seriously.
Try a Mickey Finn of something similar, that should pi$$ them off enough to wanna break your fly in half.
