Hi Ron I met you a few times in the past at TFFC at Middelpunt I think from about 1980 through late 1980s? I seem to recall you also did carp specimen fishing a la Richard Walker? Presume you fish at Thrybergh being a Rotherham man (I see The Millers are not doing too well?)? I used to mainly fish on the Thames/tributaries and Severn/tributaries (trout/chub/grayling ffishing) when I lived in England before coming to SA in 1970. From 1970 as our Stithians fishing club we used to fish the Vaal/Harties etc as well as of course Mpumalanga. I lived in Oz 1988/1995 and enjoyed ffishing there in Victoria. Tom and Andrew Levy are on our Stithians Flyfishers committee, both being 'old boys'! We should be seeing Malcolm, Louis, Malcolm, Trevor and Peter Arderne this Thursday night for a book launch with the FOSAF guys here in Joburg. Any fishing at present? Guess the reservoir's shut but maybe the pike and grayling coming good for winter fishing? Will pass on your regards to all/any of the 'seniors' on Thursday!
Cheers, Chris

You see I even remember a bit of Afrikaans. It came in handy when I used to visit Holland, which when I was working was once a month. I am retired now of course.
I would have given my eye teeth to have stayed in SA but the problem was I lost my job and there wasn't much chance of me getting another one. A job offer from one of the UK companies I represented in SA made me up stakes.
And what of people like Tom Sutcliffe, Roger Baert, Mark Yelland, Rod Cross, Louis vd Westhuizen and even Ed (Pea stick) Herbst. Are these people still around?
I spoke to my old mate Bill Steele yesterday and all sorts of memories came flooding back.
Look after those yellowfish by the way. Me and a guy called Charlie Menhennet in the old RPA were catching them on dry fly on the Vaal River near Parys long before many even thought about it.
I used to know a certain Chris Williams who was the chief brewer at Chamdor Brewery in Krugersdorp. He was a very keen fly fisher and today works for Guinness in London.
I think he spends most of his free time on the River Eden after seatrout.
I wish that was me! My father, also Chris, was with SAB for a while but he still lives here as well!! I'll send you a personal message on the gentlemen you mention!

Welcome Ron,true legend re dry fly on the Vaal.

Ja, my son Sean still says "howzit" and he is an Aussie these days.
He is teaching the Aussies how to braai. The haven't got a clue as they burn everything. Still you can get half decent boerwors in Sydney. I am out there next year. They do have some keen fly fishers in and around Sydney and there is some good trouting in the Blue Mountains area.
But the best fishing is for the indigenous bass and several estuary species.
Welcome Ron. You may recognise the avatar from the UK forum. I use the same on both. Great to have you join us on this forum.
