Followed a step by step stonefly from the internet.

    How does it look?

Should the hackle standy like that on top?

Mike, the Flashback is good and will catch fish. My crit on this fly is that the flash back has "slipped" with the thread and is not central, giving the fly a "mohican " type hairstyle. This will however work.

The Stonefly however is surprising. I have never seen a Stonefly pattern with a hackle. There again I have not seen many Stonefly patterns.
If you want to tie the perfect Stonefly then Nymph+o ( Ferdie ) is your freind.
I only know of 2 people who fish them though , Nymph+O and another buddy of mine who is not on the site.
With both of them AFAIK it is well above the Barrage where you actually get these goggas.

Experimentation is good, but I would like to suggest that you tie 15 flies of each pattern that you will use daily. 5 in # 12 , 5 in 14 , and 5 in 16,
Once tying V Ribs then go for 14, 16 and 18.
This will put you in good stead for the dries which apart from the EHK normally start at 14 and go down to 20.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

    Hi Mike,

Just something to watch out for is not to crowd the hook eye. You need to leave a little bit of space to form a thread head and tie off behind the eye. If your thread head starts protruding over the sides of the hook eye, the fly will be difficult to tie on when you want to fish it, and will also have a tendency to unravel, as the wraps can easily be pulled off the hook over the eye.

    Good luck with the tying.

    Regards,

    Shaun
