    Question Leaders

I would like to know what leaders you use for what size/weight fly.Do any of you tie your own or do most of you buy tapered leaders and just taper down with tippet.i would like to know the formulas used for different types/sizes and weight flies.I think many beginners on the forum will find it interesting to know how to set up a leader to turn a no.20 dry for instance.Something I myself have not done. Please share some secrets to your leader setup.

Personally i prefer Peersalls silk furled leaders for spooky trout, uni thread furled leaders most all other times, kevlar and braid combo for the SWOFF, just do a google search and you will soon learn how & just about all the info you need to make your own.

    Regards

I tie my own. At this stage I'm using a 60/20/20 setup for yellowfishing.

Do search for "leader calc", a very useful excell sheet making leader construction a breeze!

I also tie my own. As nice and easy as the store bought tapered leaders are, you trash a store bought leader and the $$$ soon mount up.

So I went out about did some reading (do a Google for "hand tied leaders" and you'll soon have enough reading to keep awake a few nights... ) and decided what I wanted to tie and went out bought a bunch of spools of mono and got down to the business.

Follow up on MyWorlds suggestion of "Leader Calc" - it's available from the Global FlyFisher website here:

    http://globalflyfisher.com/fishbetter/leadercalc/

That should sort you with just about any taper you heart desires

What I also found useful, was a place to start, and the "Fish Swami" blog site has a useful article on matching the mono to what you are fishing with (rod weight and line) and trying to chuck (tiny dries vs saltwater monsters). Check it here:

    Now go get "knotted"...

In the Vaal context, boiled leaders are good for dry fly in certain circumtances, for streamer fishing you want a solid 'no give' leader and line.

Yup, hence why I now use a section of 15lb braid as my leader when buggering around (or nymphing). Works a treat.
    Check your knots!
