Imitating Heptageniidae and Baetidae Nymphs

Absolute must have Nymphs for the Vaal. I tie these in natural (brown and black) and with a flashback. Refer to this thread to view a Trico Nymph.

Body: Tan D-rib.It shows brown because of the brown thread underbody.
Wingcase: Medallion Sheet Amber marked brown.
Legs: Brahma Natural
Thorax: SLF Squirrel Brown

Are these to be fished in the water column, or as emerging patterns?
I don't see any weight. Or will you use a heavier fly to get it down?
Or do you grease it up and fish it in the surface film?

These are unweighted cause I want them to be as free moving as possible and a point fly in a 3 fly setup nymphing the Vaal. They will be taken to the required levels by means of other weighted flies or split shot.

With a dry 'n dropper approach I recommend a bead or fluoro or grease but they are 2x wire hooks so with 5x or 6x tippet you shouldn't have that big a problem getting down.

As they would imitate swimmers, or normally, have you ever tried to fish them on the swing?

Well the 1st one isn't, they are Clingers.

The Baetidae or swimmers/darters have scope for such party tricks. Yes I swing a lot later in the day but you have to remember; SM eat small flies on the bottom so unless something is moving ito hatching and drifting higher up it's not the correct approach to follow,you need to get down.
