    Strange for a freshwater fish...

It looks like the flathead that you catch in our lagoons but that is obviously a slatwater fish.

I caught 6 of them just accros the border from SA. (Between Moamba and Sabie) They are not close to any estuary. Caught in freshwater.

    Default Strange Fish

If it was a saltwater fish I would take a guess & say it looks like a "Gurnet".
    But not sure.....

    Hi Jaco

I caught the same species on fly when staying on the Crocodile River just before Christmas. It's a 'Freshwater Goby'.

See under the Freshwater section 'Other Freshwater Species', and then see the 'Fishing Komatipoort' thread with the posts on around 7 December 2010.

It's a beautiful little fish and certainly the first time I'd seen one. It does indeed look like a combo flathead/gurnard/goby with those really pretty spots and markings

    cheers
    Chris
