    Default Great Kei river yellows

    afternoon fellow anglers.
i live in East London and was wondering if any other fly fisherman in EL have fished the kei or any of its tribs?

The Kei is running very clear and i've heard of yellows coming out. I tried early morning today but nothing.

    Any tips or tactics?
    thanks

The Kei river is packed with smallmouth yellows. Awesome fishery.
Same tactics as on the Vaal/Orange river systems.

If possible post a pic of what the waters look like,it will be easier to tell you what the prime spots should be.Not sure if there are riffles/rapids but always a good point to start at and make sure your flies hit bottom. If in open slow flowing water the dry/dropper is a good way to try determine if the fish are around.Maybe something like a stimulator with a small grhe or the likes.Good luck, keep us posted.

I've wanted to fish the Kei for ages, I'm often in the EC. Only problem is I have no idea how or where to access it from.

hi there. sorry no pic with me at the moment. plenty rapids and riffles. the water is roughly 17 degrees at the moment. we have been twice now but haven't seen any fish. the water vis i would say is almost 1m. really clean for the Kei. thanks for the help. access to the kei is really easy. at the petrol station on the N2 there is a small dust road that takes you directly to the river.

The water temps are near perfect.I would definately try target them in the glides above and below a set of rapids, especially with good viz.maybe try a bit later in the afternoon and see if you see any activity about.Hope you get one soon.Just as a matter of interest.I lived in Berlin for half my life and remeber catching yellows in Nahoon dam.Have you tried it on fly yet,any feedback?

There was an article in a magazine a few years ago. I'll see if I can dig it out at home this weekend and scan it in for you.
