    Default South African Yellowfish species

After my trip this weekend (trip report to follow) where I added my third species of Yellowfish to the list I was wondering how many species of South African Yellowfish other forum members have caught.

Here is some detail courtesy of the Yellowfish Working Group (YWG) on the Yellowfishes of South Africa:

Yellowfish belong to the large cyprinid family and are the largest, scaled freshwater fish of South Africa. Six of the nine species are true yellowfishes (genus Labeobarbus) while the other three are related species which are loosely termed yellowfish (genus Barbus).

    The true yellowfish are:
    • Orange-Vaal smallmouth yellowfish - Labeobarbus aeneus
    • Orange-Vaal largemouth yellowfish - Labeobarbus kimberleyensis
    • Clanwilliam yellowfish - Labeobarbus capensis
    • Natal yellowfish (scaly) - Labeobarbus natalensis
    • Bushveld smallscale yellowfish - Labeobarbus polylepis
    • Lowveld largescale yellowfish - Labeobarbus marquensis

    The three related species are:
    • Clanwilliam sawfin - Barbus serra
    • Berg-Breede River -whitefish - Barbus andrewi
    • Bushveld papermouth - Barbus rapax

Is the Nkomati Chiselmouth then regarded as a subspecies?

The scaly is next on the list though

I didnt even bother with the trout dams. I will do a little report with some pics when I get a chance. Fishing a clear mountain stream for wild Natal scalies was awesome.

    Clanwilliam and sawfin.
An honest fisherman is a pretty uninteresting person.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and not only is he hungry but broke for the rest of his life as well.
