Hi Guys
A mate is visiting this weekend (from KZN) and expressed an interest to go after some yellows.
Any idea if the smallies are still in the runs/rapids or have they gone to the deep pools already?
Thanks

Jean, they are no longer in the faster water.
Throats and tails of the pools as well as deepish ( 1.2 m + deep ) glides.
The dry fly action is picking up, dependant on the wind. Otherwise it's nymphs and emergers and finding the depth.
Work opposite to Summer.
Start at the top and then slowly adjust your depth lower untill you find the fish.
Tight lines
May certainly have changed since, but I was on the Vaal last week and I found nice yellows in shallow water. Latter half of the day though.

If you're fishing shallow water, possibly.
Mostly the fish will be moving from the throat belly into the bottom sections of rapids in response to a hatch coming off, with your best fun to be had fishing emergers and dries in the current tongues at the heads of pools in the late afternoon, but you cn catch cruisers throughout the day and there is usually a positive morning rise dependant on the presence of a morning hatch or not.
When in doubt, such as when fish aren't porpoise rising in place, cast small buggers/streamers into the nervous looking water and see if you get a response, usually you will.
