FREE Water Mongoose Fur Patch - SEE CONDITIONS!
Up for grabs is a 90 x 35 mm piece of very scarce and very sought after Water Mongoose fur patch. The gaurds hairs are about 20 to 30 mm and the very dense under fur is about 12 mm in length. The underfur have a almost pearl gleam to it and as can be seen from the 2 nd photo, the colour close to the skin is caramel which becomes chocolate brown near the end. Be assured that Water Mongoose fur is very scarce and a much sought after fly tying material. Just yesterday, somebody paid R200 for a similar size fur patch.
Conditions;
1. The first person to list their name here on or soonest after 14H00 on 28 October 2008 (South Africa time) will receive this Water Mongoose fur patch.
2. You must have 50 or more posts on this forum to be eligible.
If you are not serious about collecting or receiving, please do not list your name.
The Water Mongoose fur patch is available for collection from;
Isando, Johannesburg
Northriding, Johannesburg
Killarney Gardens, Cape Town (only as from 21 November 2008)
Centurion, Pretoria
I will mail the fur patch to you provided you stay outside these areas.

I may be naive ... but as a dedicated and concerned conservationist do you think we could be told the SOURCE of these pelts?
We all are aware of the end results of putting a monetary value onto animal products - always detrimental to the population of the species.

No, I do not have them mixed up. The dark fur patch is certainly Water Mongoose and the light belly fur patch is Canadian Otter (female) - both farm raised.

Only if the Cites Certification which came with the pelt is inaccurate.

For reasons of not exploiting the species, I am not willing to tell you about my source. I can tell you that neither animal is endangered and was farm raised (bred in captivity). The Canadian Otter was imported from Canada with Cites certificate and proper import documentation.

The Mongoose is from Mozambique - was a huge mission getting it here legally. But it is the same specie as the South African Water Mongoose - Atilax paludinosusis.

fair enough, but the water mongoose that i have looks completely different. Not even similar. My water mongoose was already dead when we found it, as it was the unfortunate victim of a hit and run driver. We watched it die, and we watched it's mate stressing next to the body. It was not pleasant to witness. These animals apparently mate for life, and when one dies, the remaining one will hang around the area where it's mate died, and starve itself to death. Sad really.

IT WAS NOT NICE TO CLEAN!!!:D Still have the photos on my computer somewhere. Not sure if its a bit goss to put up...?

I thik its unfair, my post ran 1350 km in bits of a second, Rols post had to do but a few miles, well his post did arive first, but whom have the fastest chicken ?? (Troep you used a tarrentaal, that is cheating, only domestic fowl may be used when running for fur, apendix 27.11 in your rule book !)
