February 2009 Saltwater Fly Swap
The theme for this fly swap: Baby Charlies.
Here are the rules;
1. You can tie any BABY CHARLIE.
2. Participants are limited to 15 members.
3. You are required to tie one fly for each participating member, one for yourself and one for the flyswap master.
4. The flies must be mailed before 28 February 2009.
5. List your name here before 15 January 2009 if you intend participating - please be serious and committed about it.
6. On 15 January 2009, the total number of flies you need to tie will be posted here.
7. Mail your flies to:
Saltwater Fly Swap - Feb. 2009
Attention: Wiets Wilken
P.O. Box 90
Isando 1600
8. Package your flies properly so that it's not damaged in the mail.
9. Get a mail tracking number and post it here once mailed.
10. Remember to include you forum name, proper name and return address.
11. Do not worry about self addressed envelopes or stamps - I will take care of that.
Notes
1. Flies go missing in the mailing system, it's vital to get a tracking number and post it here the moment you have posted.
2. Members not delivering after committing will be banned from all future flyswaps I may hold.

Hi Wolfie
We held a poll for which flies are to be tied for future flyswaps. The Baby Charlie attracted the highest number of votes. To answer your question, I think that it is a small version of a Crazy Charlie. Perhaps other members can enlighten us more about this.
The flies will mkost likely be similar, buit it is highly unlikely that they will be identical. No, you do not have to nominate the fly you intend tying.

So do we have finalization on what constitues a "baby" charlie - size 8 and/or smaller?
Was down in Durbs today so had a quick squizz at the hooks - Mustad 34007 being the preferred salty hook (any other recommendations?) but nothing smaller than a #8...

He he he...was asking 'coz my recent tying activities have been in the #12/14/16 range for trout, and all of a sudden the 34007 #8 looks like a tuna hook!
Saw some nice looking #10 "Owner" hooks...short shank with big gape though...looked like a #8 gape.

No problemo Jan!;) I think I'll use a #4, but if the guys want them smaller its not an issue. We'll probably reach a consensus (if its necassary) after the hols when everyones online again.
OK strafdop for me!:rolleyes: To match the size dumbell eyes I bought I'm dropping the hook size to a #6. I've painted and epoxied the eyes onto the hooks, they all ready to be tied up!;)

If nobody steps to the plate within the next few weeks, then who knows?
The flies might just get sent my way?
If it comes my way again or anyone else's way, I would like to suggest that we try and work it on a way where every entrant pays his own return postage, because running swaps with 15 - 16 entrants per Salt and Fresh Swap with the host handling all costs, becomes expensive and will put a dent in most peoples wallet.
Just my Zim Million Dollar thought......;)

My flies were posted last week thursday!! overnight express courier. Should have been collected after 10h30 friday. They have up untill last night not been available. Post office is now investigating courier service and if not delivered as supposed to Isando P.O. last friday, they will refund.:cool:

I sent 9 flies, and received 8 back as promised, but 2 were Dave's little bright green bugger, errr I mean charlie :p, and 1 was certainly no "baby charlie", a little on the big side and more clouser style...who's fly was that? The only pics that weren't posted by Wiets on the other forum were for Deewy and Wolfie....
Any clarification?

As said previously in my mesage, I ogriginally thought the flyswap was cancelled, I then asked on the 5th of March if I must still provide the flies and received no response.
I will still gladly supply the flies and forward them via the Post office if you still havn't sent the flies off to everybody, please just let me know.

Thanks for clearing that up Rudolf. The *not so baby* charlie must have been Deewy's then...kinda guessed with the dollop of epoxy on the head...:D
I don't think there is need for you to send the flies now at this stage, Wiets has already distributed the flies from that swop.
