I'm totally new to Fly Fishing, I'm from SlaapStad.

Been out thrice and landed a WitVis, who the hell needs Viagra.

Currently just doing dams until I'm more confident.

I have some flies, not sure if they are they correct ones.

What flies would I need to get, to fish dams in the Western Cape Area.

Welcome Philip,

For stillwaters, you should be fine with a selection of woolly buggers & fritzes. I'd suggest you pop in at Eikendal and get either Mark or Philip to show you or if you are closer to town, either visit John @ Upstream in Wynberg or Craig @ Stream X in Milnerton.

I know of a few dams in the area, but have not been to all of them.


Eikendal between Stellenbosch and Somerset West on R44 - Trout, Bass, Kurper
Eikenhoff in Grabouw - Bass
Wiesenhof - Bass
Fischer Haven (Klein Botelary) on Botelary Road - Bass
Jonkershoek Flywaters - Trout


These are the major dams I know of with the species available that I know of. Some venues may have more to offer though. If someone has more info or I have made some errors, please correct me.

Just ask around whenever you visit a fly fishing shop and they will surely be able to point you in the right direction with some useful tips!
