    Default fly-fishing n00b

    hi everyone,

glad i found the forum, as i love reading/researching something before i get started, and love meeting new people with same interests, and knowledge to impart

so i started bass fishing a few weeks ago, and my wife just told me about a long weekend away she organised. i found out the place has fishing, but only fly-fishing, and their dams are stocked with trout.

i thought "thats a perfect reason to get stuck into fly fishing".

so my first question is this:

do you guys think its worth it buying a fly fishing starter kit? something like the scientific anglers trout starter kit?

i figure when i do upgrade, my kids can use the entry level stuff to start too!

    cheers - and nice forum!

    Hi V aughn,

Welcome to the forum, you will enjoy it here and meet great people.

I had a look at the sci anglers kit the other day and thought it to be good value for money. Expecially for starting out and youngsters, also I wouldn't go and spend a hell of a lot of money if I was uncertain that fly fishing was something I would take up as a permanent passion.

If you have fly fished before and already have a passion, my suggestion would be to look at the alternatives and spend a bit more money on a decent setup to start withm

To which venue are you going?

    Hi FCL,

i was kinda thinking the same thing. right now im not sure, but the fishing bug has really bitten, and at this stage i'm not too fussed about the type of fishing as long as i have a line in the water.

i like that i can fish for bass on the fly setup too. and the idea of getting some big yellows just sounds fantastic!!! i've also never tasted trout - i've heard its very good. havent had a decent fight with a fish yet either, so yeah, i'm a real beginner at all this.

the venue is balele mountain lodge. we have a spot booked there in april, so also there is no real rush just yet, 'cept for that nagging feeling i have all the time that says i should rather be fishing i cant wait to try get into fly...

    ciao

    Hey VeeCee,

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the world of flyfishing. Once this think takes you there is no turning back, it's like taking the blue pill

If you're going to target Yellows rather start with an Xplorer kit. You can get a good value kit at a good price from Ghani's in Witbank, or Muvangana, just Google them. The cheap starter kits will last you two trips on the Vaal. Xplorer will last you a long time and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

    Cheers
Fishing is just my thing. I don't know what it is but it seems that i just can't get enough of it.

    Welcome VeeCee

I grew up about 100km from there and cut my teeth one those dams for the last 12 years.

Send me a PM and I'll give you the odds and ends about the venue.

    Cheers

    thanks guys,

i've been doing as reading as possible before i put the cash on the table, and the explorer II sounds like very good value for money.

i was thinking around 5w should do the trick? i'm kinda looking for an all rounder. at this stage i'm not sure what fish i will be targeting yet, and all i know is that i will be trout fishing in a dam in april.

so it seems like the explorer is the recommended entry level rod, what about the same recommendations for reels, line, leader, etc?

thanks for the all the help so far, and Mr GT, you're about to get a PM

    Hey Vaughn

    Welcome to the forum.

I think you should rather look at a 6 weight, as it is a bit more versatile. If you are going to use it for bass as well, bass flies tend to be bit bigger, and if the wind is up, you will cast better with the 6# as opposed to the 5#.

    Cheers
