Cool, thanks very much. I know very little about Sterkfontein, but I need to start reading up on the subject.

    From WikiPedia ...

The Sterkfontein Dam, located just outside the town of Harrismith, in the Free State, province of South Africa, is part of the Tugela-Vaal Water Project, and located on the Nuwejaarspruit, a tributary of the Wilge River in the upper catchment area of the Vaal River.
    However ...

The dam receives its water via the Tugela-Vaal Project which is a pumped-storage scheme involving the net transfer of up to 630 million m3 of water from KwaZulu-Natal. This is stored in Sterkfontein Dam and released to Vaal Dam via the Wilge River when needed.
So it was above the Wilge and got it's water pumped to it from other rivers.

......And going back to the original question of: " Yellows being native to Sterkies"

small mouth yellows occur naturally in the Nuwejaarspruit (can still fish for them there today), when the dam was built they were trapped and have existed happily ever since.

Largemouth yellows where however stocked (two separate stockings afaik). the water in KZN that is pumped up contains scalies, but afaik no scalies have ever been found in sterkies.

So there were no LargeMouth in the Nuwejaar's prior to the dam being built ? Would be interresting if someone had some factual info about this collected prior to the dam being built.

Have you got any info regarding the stockings that were done ? I find this kind of stuff facinating.

This is the point I was trying to make; I do not have actual facts that can back it up but it does make sense that they originated from the system......... smiley face!River and sterkies.jpg

Thanks again. Always interesting to learn new stuff for me. Would be interesting ito the largemouths etc as well. I always pictured Sterkfontein as being a closed system.

Perhaps the largemouth were stocked in an attempt to control the bass. If a good number of sizeable trout could be stocked, this would take care of the bass, but I fear that it is such a big dam, that it would require several thousand trout of good size, and this would be prohibitively expensive. Trout would also have to be stocked regularly, as they wouldn't be able to breed, so perhaps 50 thousand browns of about 15 inches or more.....Mmmm never going to happen.
