    Default Gariep dam

Pretty soon or so I will be going up to the Gariep dam area, Overstone to be precise.
I have heard of yellow Fish below the dam wall in the river. I will be taking tying kit and rods.
Has anyone fished for yellows in the area? What other species can be targeted?

I will be interested in Yellow fish as my primary target.
    Any advise welcome

    Cheers
    Brian

Gariep has nice fishing WHEN TURBINES NOT ON.
The water below the dam rises a lot and fast, much like van der kloof.
Your best bet for decent fishing would be to cross over the dam wall then turn left to Orange river tented camp. There is much better access to the river almost right up to the dam wall.Even during heavy flow you can still fish from the sides.
Water might be slightly cold already but some size 10 woolys stripped along the banks etc. might even land you a largie or 2

I know about the Tented camp of Ivan. A mate of mine said he would organize it for me, he went hunting there.
    Thanks for the info guys.

There are 2 nice rapids there with loads of fish, but as I said, beware the turbines. If you are in the middle and the siren goes off you might not make it back to the side in time.Take one of the paddle boats and keep it near you. Also find a specific rock or plant a stick somewhere and keep an eye on it.When you see the water rising move ,quickly
