Although if I am wrong, well that really baffles the brain then!

Well i was going to agree with Bertu actually. After the last forward stroke, rotating the rod 90 degrees def helps me. You can actually feel the line speed up. Something about the wobble on the line not hitting the blank, therefore less resistant, therefore faster shooting of line.

I was taught this way back by my casting teacher.

Although it is easier to rotate the reel outwards not inwards, so unfortunately you cant watch the backing go.

Most of the published casting instructors say that the rod should always load and release along the spine, so it tells me that in order to do this, the spine is out of line with the direction of the cast..... not sure how I feel about this, but if it gets the desired effect, then good.
Andre you only rotate after you shoot the line, when the rod has finished doing it's job.

I do this aswell, but rotate my hand outwards (ie: anti-clockwise) by about 45 degrees. When casting longer leaders it helps me to avoid trailing loops which I otherwise end up with.

It definitely works, but supposedly it's bad form and we should actually learn to cast properly... oh well.

yes anti clockwise for me too.

Saflyfish - another question. how do you grip the rod? Lots of people grip with forefinger on top and cant understand why they cant get the power. Thumb on top definitely adds power. if you grip with forefinger on top, then this change could be a quick win for you.

getting a whole line out is not difficult.....to me controlling it is....wind knots are a problem on longer distances to me at this stage and my loops seem to be too tight at times as sometimes my fly hits my main line and the tangles are a nightmare lol.....anyone might be able to help? The tighter the loops the faster my line....the faster my line the farther it goes....but then as all is going REALLY well the loops become too tight and bam...fly against the main line and tangle....

Also sometimes I dont even notice a wind knot....when I inspect my line it's just there lol....even though I am capable of putting a whole line out after 3 weeks of ever picking up a fly rod I am giving it a rest for now....I need to try get this thing right.....accuracy and luckily the streams I am planning on fishing does not require the outright distance....roll casts have been mastered but my next port of call is mending line as I have absolutely no experience on rivers and streams.....man I am loving the challenges of fly fishing....it's frustrating at times but rewarding more often than not.....sometimes I simply forget I have no experience with a fly rod even though I have been fishing for over 20 years and that is what frustrates me but what motivates me at the same time....

It's awesome to be able to learn and start to crawl again....thanks guys for helping us out so much.....this site has definately been worth its weight in gold....
