Is this specifically in terms of flyfishing? How does hunting work or is it irrelevant to the conversation?
Surely if I advertise my services as a guide I take responsibility in terms of the clients well being?

I think there is a qualification for that actually.

Let's make a rough list of our requirements for a guide and see if we can formulate some sort of reference document/checklist.
Once we have all the input we do a final document.

    I will start
    1) Must have completed a basic first aid course and always carry basic first aid equipment with.
    2) Should only actively fish on the request of the person being guided or when demonstrating a certain aspect.
    3) Should know the difference between Macrosternum and Makro shopping centre. (Basic understanding of entomology)

Those are the only Unit Standards available on the SAQA site. What the full qualification requires is anyone's guess. Probably the full Filed Guide Qualification plus those 3 Unit Standards.

I understand it the same as Smallstreams.co.za. I think you also need a Professional Driving licence if you intend transporting clients.

Interestingly I believe if you have a skippers licence you are allowed to take clients out to sea without any further registration

Very good question, let me try and help. FGASA is a field and Nature guiding association. They oversee most of the bushveld guiding operations. They do not have an adventure guiding classification, which is where fishing guides fit in. I did my course with FGASA several years ago, and then did a basic cultural tour guide course, but to become accredited for fly fishing, it was a problem, as FGASA has no fly fishing assessors. The solution was to look at previous experience, provincial competition experience, club involvement, (at that stage I was a CPS committee member) So I had to submit all these "credentials" to the FGASA assessment office, and they took a view, and in their wisdom, applied to the powers that be in THETA, and I received accreditation. We going back many years, so things might have changed since then. I have subsequently allowed my membership of FGASA to expire, and have not done any first aid updates, or anything, so I don't know what my status would be should I wish to reinstate my memberships.
One more thing... the accreditation for guides is usually regional. My FGASA nature guiding accreditation was limited to the Western and Northern Cape. Any other areas, require a practical assessment before accreditation is granted.

Uhm, what does the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA
    ) cover.

I am a bit confused here - seems like we have a ton of 'guides" who declared themselves guides though.
Do you have to belong to a Association of some sort to be a guide?
Are people like Jaques Marais and Dennis de Klerk guides?
