How did these things get there in the first place?
In an effort to improve water quality on the lower Smalblaar Beats, we will be netting the ponds at the lodge in an effort to remove the Tench which are muddying the water. We need as many hands as possible to make this a success as this needs to be accomplished before December 1st. The date will be Saturday 29th November between 8am and 1pm. Ryan Weaver will be supplying seine nets to assist the process. The netting activity will probably make the outflow from the ponds more muddy in the short term so please take this into account when making bookings after the 28th November. This will probably have a negative effect on water clarity on the Lower Smalblaar/Molenaars for about a week depending on the weather.
I appeal to interested parties to support this initiative by volunteering your muscle and time. Please add your name to this thread and PM/email your contact details to me. (garnet.prince@gmail.com)

Disclaimer.... none of my posts are intended to be "expert advice"..just opinions from someone who is willing to help where he can.
Dear All, the Du Kloof Lodge notified us that due to a wedding arrangement and a fully booked hotel this weekend, we have to unfortunately cancel Saturday morning's netting project. The lodge management will notify us with future suitable dates; CapeNature will also be available to help out on the future arranged dates. Sorry about the late notice, we were not informed about the wedding arrangements when the project was discussed with the hotel management two weeks ago.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
From Leonard Flemming:
I think the tench were introduced as ornamental fish a number of years ago and have since spread throughout the ponds system at Du Kloof Lodge (I recall seeing tench with the kois in the display ponds in front of the hotel many years ago - 11-12 years ago?). Remember that the Breede River system already holds a breeding population of tench and it may also not be unlikely for tench to move into the Molenaars River from the downstream source.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
Action: Molenaars River water quality complaints
After the Cape Piscatorial Society committee and Molapong Trout received several complaints from CPS members regarding the water quality of the Molenaars River below the Du Kloof Lodge area, Dr. Leonard Flemming was tasked to perform a professional water survey to identify potential sources of pollution on the Lodge property. The survey included measurements of turbidity, nutrient levels and E. coli numbers. The outcome showed that high levels of turbidity and nutrients, and high numbers of E. coli were present in the Lodge effluent coming jointly from the Du Kloof Lodge fishing ponds and the Du Kloof Aquaculture ponds. The Breede Overberg Catchment Management Agency and CapeNature representatives have been notified about the problem(s) and a team of government authorities and specialists will be working on a solution. It is important for CPS and MCSA members to know that the river water below the Du Kloof Lodge area is not safe for human consumption. The members of these organisations will be notified once the E. coli numbers have dropped to a safe level.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
Starting this project up again. This time the aim is to drain the ponds.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.
This project is ready to go.

THIS EVENT IS CONFIRMED FOR 20/03/2015.
The CPS will be draining the ponds at the lodge in an effort to remove the Tench which are contributing to the muddying of the water in the Smalblaar. We need as many hands as possible to make this a success. Please note that the actual removal of Tench starts on Saturday 21st after 10am if enough water has been pumped out. Myself, Bernard Charles and Leonard Flemming will be going to the lodge on Friday 20th to set up the pumps and get started.
Please contact me if you have any questions. (garnetDOTprinceATgmailDOTcom)
