Default tight loops vs opn loops

Heres a subject not often discussed, the merits of the casting loop, with regard to the fishing application.
I am finding more and more, that my chosen fishing circumstances, have no need for tight loop casting, and the open loop technique, just works better.
Ok, I don't do very much salt water and distance casting application where I need a tight loop to cut through the air in order to achieve the distance, nor do I like fast action rods whose sole purpose id to provide the tight loops that are often required for distance fishing. I get the feeling that most people place a high regard on a rod that can perform a tight loop, and they tend to forget the valuable open loop in most of their fishing.

When trying to get a fly in underneath brush/bush/trees, or doing reach-mend, hook and curve casts, higher line speed and smaller loops are crucial. Open loops have their place, just as tight/smaller loops.

I agree a hundred percent with all you say. my feeling and the reason for my thread, is to highlight the fact that open loops have as much a place in fly fishing, as tight closed loops, and certain applications are better performed with an open loop.

Completely agree Andre. One of the things that makes me like a rod is how easy it is to cast a more open loop (at a decent distance). I open up the loops on purpose on nymphing rigs. In other applications a nice tight loop is good, but a tight loop isnt the right thing for all applications.

I have seen Pascal perform Side casts with open loops. The Czechs have another cast, with a normal high back cast, coming forward with a dropping/dropped rod tip and open loop to cast under trees or overhangs.
    BOTH spectacular to witness.
It was a learning curve just watching them performing it.
At first it is WTF, then do it again, then "HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT?"

I'm sure Pascal also has to throw a smaller loop under pressure ...
