Berg River Dam - Pools Below the Wall
Morning Everyone
I went on an exploratory trip this past weekend around Paarl, had a shot at some of them finicky Berg River carp in town (no luck) and tried exploring other stretches of the river. I came across a couple of mouthwatering-looking pools just under the wall of the Berg River Dam. They are deep with plenty of rocky structure and crystal clear water, with a strong flow from the wall outlet. Hiked down and cast a crystal bugger for a bit but wasn't sure whether I'm actually allowed to fish there, so didn't give it a proper bash.
The pools look absolutely perfect for smallmouth bass though. There were no 'no fishing signs' up anywhere and no fences. Has anyone fished these pools before?

I have fished between the bridge and dam wall on a couple of occasions.
on every trip, got the odd fish,
there are some spots that are much better than others, Not easy fishing.
You have to work hard for every fish.
If you take effort spent vs fish landed, it is much better to go to Elandspad or Smalblaar.

Golden Rainbow - was that you fishing down below the main bridge/just above the weir in town? Carp were in a bitchy mood to say the least.. typical winter fish..

The carp in the Berg river is such amazing fish to fly fish for.
Big fish, that is extremely spooky, in crystal clear water. So you have to be on top of your game to catch them.
And if you do hook them, the are very strong and very fast.
Where do we get to sight fish for 6 to 10 pound fish, that is ultra spooky in crystal clear water?
And because they roam around, you have to change your approach the whole time.
If you are lucky, you can get them on the dry fly.
there are 3 spots that I know, where they hold stationery like trout and feed on the surface.
Super selective, super spooky and very thin tippet, otherwise they bolt away.

If it was the dusty old black Nissan Tiida you saw then yes that was me. They were indeed highly bitchy, but definitely a cool first-time experience...I'm making it my mission to catch one.

the problem here Korrie is my fishing buddy lives in table view.

PS: and after 3 or 4 photos of the big carp and some serious fishing stories about how you caught it, he will drive to you to go with you.
