Was that a cream saddle hackle on your head?
Seriously, nice pic!
Hmm, maybe we should start a thread on the OLDEST pic you have of yourself with a fly caught fish! This was definitely my oldest pic above.

Those ARE the days!
[QUOTE=Michael;60780]That was when I still HAD fluff on my dome, which started dissapearing when I was 26...I now take the appearance of my father on the left. It saves on shampoo...

And here was me thinking it was a pic of you and a freind, quietly stealing more than the allowable bag
Seriously though it's amazing how much you take after your father., and I'm not just talking the dome either.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

My first fish on fly was a small Largemouth bass +-20cm.. fishing a private dam in the Eastern Cape.. got my fly rod on the thursday afternoon.. practised for a few hours casting in the garden and hit the water early the friday morning.. a few days later hooked a big one but it wrapped my tippet around a submerged tree...
Just went through this thread and didn't even once picked up on anybody catching their first trout at Rainbow Trout Farm. I thought most guys in the Jhb area learned to ff at Rainbow - heard it is closed now.
My first trout on fly was with a small spinning rod on a very small stream near Sabie. only two flies - Silver dr. and royal coacman. let the fly drift down the stream and retrieved it. I must have been about 10 years old and had a blast of a time.
Got some ff gear at Sollies - Silstar #6/7 rod with sinking line and of to Rainbow Trout Farm to teach myself some fishing. Dad is not fisherman and I had to figure out everything by myself. Favourite fly when I started out: Walkers Killer fished deep and slow.
My first fish caught on fly was a Rainbow trout at Jonkershoek; in June 2007; on a Hamils Killer. This done on my very first outing. My mate showed me how to cast, and i slapped the water for about an hour and a half and then all of a sudden the action began. My affair with fly fishing began at that very moment.
Caught Hook line and sinker!
My first fish on fly was a 1.5kg rainbow trout, caught at the De Beers farm in Dullstroom. The fly was an olive, bead-head bugger, on a sinking line. I caught 8 for the day, all over a kilo. Sets a bad precedent!
That was some 18 years ago when i was 14!
You are a perishable item. Live accordingly.
I cant remember my first but i had to have been on a hammils killer when i was about 5. To this day my dad still fishes a hammils killer whenever he can, I give him a lot of stick, but it still seems to work for him.
Recently i started taking my old ones apart to make a thing called a pappa roach which i beleve flybum came up with.
