Arrow MSP Fly -Tying Instructions (for Largemouth Yellowfish)

FLY: MSP (This is the black version, can be tied in Dark Olive as well)

    Fish Targeted: Largemouth Yellowfish

    MATERIALS:

HOOK: Tiemco TMC811S #4 (Also tie in #6, #8) or suitable substitute.
    THREAD: Black 6/0 Danville
EYES: Beadchain or dumbell eyes, gold or silver
    WEIGHT: (Optional) 0.015 lead wire
BODY: Gold "Fuzzy Bug" Body Yarn, or Thin Gold Cactus Chenille, or suitable substitute
    WING: Zonker Strip, Black

    TYING INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Tie in the bead-chain eyes, AFTER you have put in the weight (lead wire) if desired. Secure down with thread, and add a drop of superglue to the thread holding down the eyes, and that secures the weight (lead wire)
Take your thread to a position just behind the eyes.

STEP 2: Tie in your gold body yarn, or cactus chenille. Trim the excess. Take your thread to a position just in front of the eyes.

STEP 3: Wind the body material around the shank, going back and forth from the eyes to the bend of the hook. This is where a full rotary vise is so usefull...you whip finish the thread, and leave it hanging on your bobbin rest. Then simply hold the body material, and rotate your vise, so doing building up a body as shown. Tie off your thread, and cut it off. (You will remove the hook from the vise and add the zonker strip in a moment).

STEP 4: Cut a zonker strip as shown, about 1.5 times the length of the hook shank.

STEP 5: Remove the hook from the vise. Now measure the distance the zonker strip will occupy from just in front of the eyes, to the bend of the hook, and pierce it from the UNDERSIDE as shown.

STEP 6: With the hook inverted, insert it in your vise again, as shown. Start your thread again, just in front of the eyes.

STEP 7: Pull the zonker strip over the body and the eyes, and secure it with thread just in front of the eyes. Whip finish the thread, and cut it. Add some head cement to the threads. (This pic shows the way the fly will swim in the water, with hook point riding up, because of the bead-chain eyes tied in on top of the hook shank).

STEP 8: The finished fly. Remember, it will swim upside down from this position (the right way up in the water when you fish it, in other words). This is a good feature, as it will not snag on structure as much, because the hook point is riding up.

    Nice sequence Mike.

    Thanks.

As an optional add on for an MSP with a little more flash, one can also add between 5 and 10 pieces of krystal flash or very thin flashabou cut just slightly shorter than the Zonker strip tied in and splayed at where the thread ends off before the bend of the hook, in a colour to match the body.

I've also seen a variation that uses krystal flash of the same colour as the zonker strip (ie: say black) and it really does add a little something without turning it into a christmas decoration.

That's not a bad option at all, Bertu. Allthough this is the original tying style, one can always try new things like adding the flash, should work pretty good as it adds another attraction and trigger.

Do you guys reckon I should tie some of these up to try for Tigers, Nembwe, and the various bream species in the Kavango?

Anyone else tried them for these species?

I'd say why not, Make sure you have a very strong hook. As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
It's not in the catching, it's in the learning something new.

    Grant,

The MSP may work, but I don't know...never heard anyone take tigers on these. Tiger flies normally have the classic baitfish profile, and normally has some red in it too.

If I were you, have a look in FOSAF's "Favoured Flies and Select Tecniques of the Experts" Volume 3 (Latest one). They list about 20 patterns specifically for tiger fish in there, some really great patterns. Nembwe are "big kurper" basically, and will take the same flies. Always worth it to take bass flies with of course, for Nembwe and Bream. Volume 1 of the same range of books has some good patterns for bass, will work up there too.

    regards
