I had just sent out the first cast of the day, fishing off the rocky crag on the south side of the bay, fishing deep, as it had been pretty hot over the past days, using a weighted Muddler Minnow, my Lakies favourite. I had just tightened into the retrieve when the line stopped solid. "Fiddlesticks" I thought. "First cast and I'm stuck". Tried pulling harder and the line started vibrating, but so vigorously, that the water was frothing where the line entered the water. I went totally blank. I wondered what I had. Fish? Otter? Turtle? a scuba diver extracting the urine? The line came towards me at a very sedate , unhurried manner for about 3-4 meters, then stopped and the head-shaking began again. My old Daiwa was bent double, and nothing, but nothing could influence whatever it was at the end of the line. This went on for about 5 or so minutes. Never moving more that a few metres and then head-shaking again. I was using both hands to hold the rod as my wrist was kaput. Then it stuck for the last time, wrapped around something and was gone. I still wonder what it was. Really a very strange experience.
I have heard of similar experiences.
An experienced fisher of eels, who also fly fishes, had the same happen to him at Lakies. He is of the firm opinion that there are eels in Lakenvlei and this is probaly an eel taking the fly.
