    Default The Ureweras May 08

I recently had a very enjoyable weekend with some mates in the bush. We spent 3 days camping hiking, rowing and fishing in Te Urewera National Park. I thought I'd share some pictures of one of my favourite places. No monster fish caught, but enough to keep us busy, and what could be better than time outdoors in a true wilderness.

The lake we fished required a hike to get to it, and a row across it to get to the DOC (Department of Conservation) Hut. The weather was kind on the first day:

Fish were taken harling and on the fly, although flyfishing in 25 to 30ft of water required a DI7 line and long casts. The best fish was about 6 lbs, with most running 2 to 4 lbs:

Most fish were released, not all though. Some were kept for the BBQ.

This being the mountains, the weather did not last. View from the hut the next morning:

The last day we fished a stream on the way out - note the fishes sitting mid-stream:

    Plenty of willing rainbows:

Hooked and lost (of course) a big brown. But by that stage I hardly cared. As we rejoined civilisation I was already planning my next trip.

Very similar to trolling. Basically putting a line out the back of the boat and rowing around the lake. We used a long (maybe 25ft) leader attached to a deepwater express flyline, attached to backing. Markings on the backing assist in determining how much line to let out to cover the depth you are fishing in. Not as much fun as flyfishing, but certainly requires some skill.

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you enjoyed the pics.
