Default Copper John - Step By Step

    Receipe:

    Hook: TMC5262 #12-#18
    Weight: Tungsten bead, Lead wire
Thread: UTC 70 Denier, colour of choice
    Tail: Goose Biots
Abdomen: Ultra Wire. Size Medium for #12 flies, Brassie size for #14-#16, Small size for #18
    Thorax: Peacock Herls
Wingcase: Black Thin Skin, Flashabou, 5 minute epoxy.

    Step 1:

Place the bead on the hook. Make 6-10 wraps of lead wire, break off the ends and push the wraps up inside the recess at the back of the bead.

    Step 2:

Tie in 2 goose biots for the tail. They should be tied in concave sides up and should extend around 1/2 the length of the hook shank.

    Step 3:

Form a tapered underbody from thread.

    Step 4:

Tie in a piece of Ultrawire at the start of the abdomen. Ensuring it remains on top, wrap all the way down to the tail, and back up to just behind the thorax to secure it properly.

    Step 5:

Wrap the wire in touching turns forwards to form the abdomen. Tie in a piece of Flashabou at the thorax.

    Step 6:

Cut a section of Thin Skin, just slightly narrower than the hook gape. Tie in for the wingcase.

    Step 7:

Take 3 peacock herls and tie them in by the tips. Twist into a rope and form the thorax. Tie in 2 clumps of partridge hackle barbs, one on either side, to form the legs.

    Step 8:

Stretch the Thin Skin forward over the thorax, then pull the piece of Flashabou forward over the Thin Skin, ensuring it is correctly aligned to the middle of the wingcase. Tie off with a Whip Finish behind the bead.

    Step 9:

Mix up a batch of 5 minute epoxy. Apply a blob over the wing case, letting it overlap the bead as well as the wire wraps just slightly.

Finished fly tie with Wine coloured Ultra Wire:
